Fashion’s Mount Rushmore is subjective. Someone’s Balenciaga, Rick Owen, Dior and Margiela is another’s Louis Vuitton, Balmain, Chanel and Bottega Veneta. Despite the variances, one thing stands true: Chanel and Dior are permanent fixtures in fashion’s landscape. But the duo’s rise to icon status wasn’t without peril. Apple TVs latest series “The New Look” tells the remarkable true story of fashion’s greatest game of chess.
It's hard to believe that Christian Dior and Coco Chanel were once rivals, but the legendary designers couldn’t stand each other. They shared choice words regarding the other’s work publicly, creating a gap between the rookie and the master. Chanel famously expressed, “Dior doesn’t dress women. He upholsters them.” Dior defended his designs, justifying his veneration of the female form through an architectural lens. His structural silhouettes opposed Chanel’s signature shapeless designs, and to Coco, that was a threat. Chanel held the crown for women’s luxury, but in a post-WWII Europe, could tweed withstand the arrival of The New Look?
“The New Look” stars Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior, Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel, Michael Carter as Maurice Dior, Glen Close as Carmel Snow and Maise Williams as Catherine Dior. Created by Todd A. Kessler, the 10-episode series is set to debut February 14, 2024 exclusively on Apple TV. See how Christian Dior asserts himself as king of women’s fashion in a post-war 19th century climate where everything has changed.
